Juniper Publishers-   JOJ Dermatology & Cosmetics Authored by  Vandana Roy Cosmetic surgery, as with reconstructive surgery, has its roots in plastic surgery (emerging from the Greek word ‘plastikos’, meaning to mold or form). The practice of surgically enhancing or restoring parts of the body goes back more than 4000 years. The oldest accounts of rudimentary surgical procedures is found in Egypt in the third millennia BCE. Ancient Indian texts of 500 BCE outline procedures for amputation and reconstruction. The rise of the Greek city-states and spread of the Roman Empire is also believed to have led to increasingly sophisticated surgical practices. Throughout the early Middle Ages as well, the practice of facial reconstruction continued. The fifth century witnessed a rise of barbarian tribes and Christianity and the fall of Rome. This prevented further developments in surgical techniques. However, medicine benefited from scientific advancement during the Rena...

Improvement in Scalp Dermatomyositis with Platelet-Rich Plasma- Open access journals

Juniper Publishers-   JOJ Dermatology & Cosmetics Authored by  Hosking AM Dermatomyositis (DM) is an inflammatory myopathy with hallmark cutaneous findings, including heliotrope rash, Gottron’s papules, as well as photodistributed erythema and/or poikiloderma. Scalp DM (SDM) presents as erythematous plaques with overlying scale, associated with severe burning pruritus. Due to inflammation, it may also present with non-scarring alopecia. First-line treatment for SDM includes intralesional corticosteroids; however, to date, no therapy has proven effective. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an emerging treatment modality for a variety of disease entities including arthritis, oral surgery, and skin rejuvenation. Recent reports demonstrate PRP may have a promising role in hair regrowth. Herein, we report a case of refractory SDM with significant clinical improvement after treatment with subdermal PRP injections of the scalp. We also used optical coherence tom...

It is noteworthy that out of 8 pregnancies mother has 3 stillbirths (2 boys, 1 girl), 1 miscarriage in the 2nd month of pregnancy, 2 medical abortion. Two surviving children are a girl of 14 years (health), and the boy. The patient was diagnosed with pathology of gastrointestinal tract, an allergic condition of body, high rates of C-reactive protein and the total of IgE, the defeat of internal organs which determine the severity of his condition. The literature indicated mainly in skin lesions in this disease, and sometimes mental retardation, and it occurs in consanguineous marriages. Considering that the parents of a sick child are not related to each other, it can be assumed that the mutation occurred during intrauterine development. Considering t...

Juniper Publishers- JOJ Dermatology & Cosmetics Expanding the Applications of Picosecond Lasers Picosecond laser technology has garnered much interest since arriving on the dermatological scene. While its effectiveness in removing tattoos has been well documented, demonstrating its use in other skin lesions is an ongoing process. Because quality switched nanosecond lasers and picosecond lasers share a similar mechanism, clinicians hope that picosecond lasers will prove to be useful for similar skin lesions. There has been a great focus in particular on proving its effectiveness in treating pigmented lesions, acne scarring, photodamage, and wrinkling. The early data and impressive safety profile of picosecond lasers suggest that clinicians may have another tool they can use to treat these troublesome skin conditions particularly in patients with darker skin types. Juniper Publishers- JOJ Dermatology & Cosmetics  Beauty, A Social Construct: The Curious Case of Cosmetic Surgeries Authored by Vandana Roy In this article we deconstruct the social norm of beauty and cosmetic beauty treatment, an issue that is seldom discussed in medical circles and is often lost to popular rhetoric. In doing so, we also reflect on the institutionalized system of social conditioning.Cosmetic surgery, as with reconstructive surgery, has its roots in plastic surgery (emerging from the Greek word ‘plastikos’, meaning to mold or form). Juniper Publishers- JOJ Dermatology & Cosmetics  Treatment of the Ear Giant Keratoacanthoma with Topical Imiquimod  Authored by Hong-Duo Chen Keratoacanthoma (KA) is an epidermal neoplasma with rapid growth and severe local destruction. Owing to its similarities to squamous cell carcinoma, complete surgical excision is mainly recommended. Topical imiquimod is an ideal option for the problematic sites and cosmetic demands. Here we report a giant case of KA on a rare anatomical location, and fully recorded the disease process. The patient was treated successfully with topical imiquimod.Keratoacanthoma (KA) is an epidermal neoplasma with rapid growth and spontaneous regression tendency. Owing to its similarities to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and severe local destruction, complete surgical excision is mainly recommended.
